Tips and Tricks

Here's a handy Tip and Trick for Adobe Soundbooth CS3, from presenter Bert Baldwin.
View Bert's Bio |

Soundbooth features a robust, useful set of audio effect routines that make your common cleanup tasks simple and effective.
If you find yourself working with a piece of audio that sounds unbalanced, is strangely resonant, or has a constant whine in the recording, you can easily correct these issues with Soundbooth's advanced Parametric EQ.
Load up your audio clip and make sure you can see it in the editor. Next, select the "Effects" tab on the left side of the user interface. Right-click in the open grey area under the tab, and apply an Advanced Parametric EQ. Open up the "Settings..." dialog for the effect.
With this window open, when the audio is played back, there will be a light grey line reflecting the passing frequency content of your audio. This line can give you a huge amount of information about your sound as it plays back. Typically, constant whines will appear as unmoving spikes on the grey line, and larger resonances will be wider lumps which will be obvious to you as your audio plays. Generally unbalanced-sounding audio will often be combinations of lumps and dips, all moving slightly as the audio plays, but mostly constantly-shaped. The grey line will change shape as you apply the EQ (which is shown as the red line) to your audio file. In this way, you can see the response of your audio right on your screen, as well as hear the results with your ears.
Using this visual feedback is an excellent way to precisely balance out your sounds, offering greater clarity to vocals and unparalleled mix balance later down the road.

Q: |
|
What is your favorite project you have ever worked on? |
| A: |
|
I have worked on quite a few character animation projects -and those
are certainly my favorites - some for games, some learning interfaces, and even a few children's books. They are the most fun completing. |
Q: |
|
When you're not plugged into work, what are you doing? |
| A: |
|
These days it seems to be working on my house - (going on its 3rd year
in a major renovation) -- but when I can - it's traveling. I'm hoping to get some time to go and see Greece and Rome if I can. |
Q: |
|
What are your 3 favorite features for Flash? |
| A: |
|
1. Multi-page layout - a new feature that allows you to layout your
entire website in one Fireworks file. This feature alone could possibly be the best reason for upgrading if you are already a Fireworks user.

2. Batch processing - this can speed you through a whole folder of files - and get them done and on the web in minutes.

3. Slice behaviors - writes and maintains your javascript for you, and they are designed to be so easy. No scripting experience required.
