There's a very simple, but incredibly useful trick when working within InDesign. Often times as you're creating a layout, you'll want to get an idea of how your document will look on paper, especially when your layout includes objects that are bleeding off the edge of the page. In years gone by, designers had to either convert their layout to PDF, actually print their file on their desktop printer, or go to the trouble of drawing white boxes over objects that bled off the paper. InDesign simplifies the entire process with a simple keystroke. Just make sure you have the Selection tool activated in the Toolbox, then simply hit the "W" key on your keyboard. This shuts off InDesign's Pasteboard as well as turning off the display of any guides, and any frames appearing around objects. To turn on the display of these elements again, just hit "W" once more.
What puts you into the creative mode and gets your juices flowing?
A:
I enjoy seeing what other people have created with Access. When I help answer questions in various newsgroups and forums, I have the opportunity to see how other people have created unique user interfaces for their databases. This gets me going on how I might change elements of my own databases. I also enjoy being given a challenge by my own users with my applications.
Q:
What are your 3 favorite features for this product?
A:
It's very difficult to define my top three features of Access 2007 because this version has seen so many new features added to an already feature-rich product. At the top of my list would be the new Report View. This new view allows you to filter a report to see only the information you need. I really enjoy the new Date Picker in Access 2007. This control is built into Access now which makes it very easy to display a pop-up calendar on date fields. I also think the new Attachment data type in Access 2007 will be heavily used by developers who wish to add pictures to their records.
Q:
How did you get started in the industry?
A:
I saw a business need at my full time job for a database solution. We already had Access installed on all of our computers, so I bought a book on Access and began teaching myself how to use the program. I was able to apply this knowledge and create a working application that solved our needs and saved us money. From there, I was hooked on Access and began learning as much as I could about this powerful desktop database application.
