Tip and Trick
 |
| Tip and Trick for Adobe Illustrator CS3, from Steve Samson presenter for Total Training for Adobe Illustrator CS3: Essentials |

Illustrator has a ton of keyboard shortcuts that cover just about every imaginable task, but here are some cool and useful ones that you might not discover on your own, that I've found helpful in working in Illustrator.

· Ctrl-tab (Windows) or Cmd-tilde (Mac OS) cycle you through all open documents. (This works in all Adobe Creative Suite applications, not just Illustrator).

· x toggles the focus between the object fill and object stroke, shift-x swaps the fill and stroke attributes, / applies no fill or no stroke (depending on which is the current focus) and d applies the default fill (white) and stroke (1-point black).

· In the Color palette, hold down the shift key as you drag a slider to move the other sliders relative to the slider you are dragging, changing just the tint of the color, instead of changing the color itself.

· Use ctrl-alt-shift-k on Windows or cmd-opt-shift-k on Mac OS to bring up the complete list of Illustrator keyboard shortcuts, edit existing shortcuts or create your own. You can export this list as a tab-delimited file for printing as a reference.

Presenter's Corner

We recently chatted with from Bill Jelen, presenter for Total Training for Microsoft Office Excel 2007: Advanced and known as "Mr. Excel". Here is what we learned about Bill. Bill's Bio |

 |
Q: |
|
What is your favorite project you have ever worked on? |
| A: |
|
The Australian park service had just implemented a $16 million enterprise system and was having trouble getting the reports that they needed. Using a VBA macro, I was able to replace a 40 hour manual Excel process with a single button click and 40 seconds of processing time. |
Q: |
|
When you're not plugged into work, what are you doing? |
| A: |
|
I love to hit old drive-in movie theatres. I have a collection of photographs of drive-ins that I have visited around the country. Most were built in the ‘50s when America's fascination with the automobile was rising. |
Q: |
|
What puts you into the (creative/production) mode? |
| A: |
|
I generally write my books while listening to Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run album blaring on the iPod. |
Q: |
|
What are your three favorite features for this Microsoft Excel? |
| A: |
|
· Pivot Tables are the most powerful feature in Excel and the most scary for people to use. Microsoft has made them easier in Excel 2007. Watch the training and give them a try again.

· The charting engine is Excel 2007 has been re-written. I show people how to choose the correct chart type for a certain task, and how to dive beyond the simplistic features on the ribbon.

· You can calculate anything with Excel, but most people only really use the SUM function. There are 350 other functions in Excel to help you calculate your house payment or which pizza is the best deal to order for the luncheon staff meeting. Learn how to use Excel functions to figure out when to play the lottery or when to go all-in in Texas Hold-em! |
Q: |
|
How did you get started in the industry? |
| A: |
|
I had a job as a teaching assistant at Notre Dame. A couple of the professors were using MBA students as lab rats, to see if an interactive laserdisc was more effective at training people how to use a spreadsheet. I would grade what had to be the most difficult test ever given about spreadsheets. After a semester and a half of watching every MBA student miserably fail the test, I realized I knew the solution and launched this career. |
