Tip & Tricks

Tips and Tricks from Andy Olsen, Presenter for Total Training for Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0: Building Web Applications (Set 1).

If you want to display data in a GridView, you have to choose which approach to use. If you have an existing stored procedure in the database, you can add a SqlDataSource to your Web page and link it to the stored procedure. You can then bind the GridView to the SqlDataSource, and you're in business. Alternatively, if you need to perform some additional application logic (such as calculating some values before you call the stored procedure), then a better approach might be to encapsulate the data-access code in a series of methods in a data access component. Then, you can add an ObjectDataSource to your Web page, and link it to the methods in your data access component. You can then bind the GridView to the methods in the ObjectDataSource. Generally I prefer the latter approach; I like data access components because they isolate my Web pages from any knowledge about the database, and they are also good candidates for reuse in other pages and possibly in other Web applications too.

Presenter's Corner

Recently we chatted with Yan Shvalb, founder of VizualFX, and presenter for Total Training for Final Cut Studio: A Post-Production Workflow. Yan is a quick learner and self-taught guru. His knowledge spans the full spectrum of high-end 3D animation, non-linear editing and compositing software.
View Yan's bio.

Q:

What is your favorite project that you have ever worked on?
A: Billie Holiday The Ultimate Collection DVD. I got to set my own pace and enjoyed the music every step of the way.

Q:

When is your most creative time?
A: Surprisingly, 3 am. Something magical happens and ideas just flood my mind at that witching hour.

Q:

When you're not plugged into work, what are you doing?
A: Fishing, traveling, playing hockey or watching a good film. You just might find me playing World of Warcraft when rendering.

Q:

What are your three favorite features for Final Cut Studio?
A: I like the emphasis on Final Cut Pro Studio, particularly Motion and DVD Studio Pro. The examples are very practical and could be applied to any media they are not tied to just one type of project. And I love the host!
